Volunteer Opportunities

“Volunteering can be an exciting, growing, enjoyable experience. It is truly gratifying to serve a cause, practice one's ideals, work with people, solve problems, see benefits, and know one had a hand in them.”

– Harriet Naylor

The Family Support Center of South Sound operates Thurston County’s largest 24/7 shelter for homeless families with children – Pear Blossom Place: A Family Support Community. The shelter is kept open every night from 5:00pm—7:00am 100% thanks to volunteer support. The shelter would not be possible if it weren’t for over 200 dedicated and amazing volunteers.

Pear Blossom Place offers two nightly shifts:

Greeters from 5:00-7:30pm

Overnight hosts from 7:00pm-7:00am

There are always two volunteers scheduled for each shift. We welcome and encourage volunteers to bring their children with them as this is a great opportunity to engage directly with families and children. Volunteers must complete an application, pass a criminal background check, and attend a volunteer training.

We ask that volunteers at Pear Blossom Place commit to at least one shift per month for at least a three moth commitment. Volunteers are able to self-schedule utilizing an online Volunteer Management system, allowing you to select shifts that work best with your availability.

Additional Volunteer Opportunities Include:

Donation Room Organization:

The Family Support Center’s main office location has a large donation room filled with children’s clothing, books, toys, adult professional clothing, shoes, basic need items, and more. We are always in need of help in keeping the room stocked and organized so families in need are easily able to access items they are looking for. If you are interested in helping in our donation room, complete a volunteer application now and someone will be in touch!

Leadership Team:

is a place where current and past clients come together to support one another and the agency. We work to empower ourselves by speaking up and speaking out, representing FSC and FJC in the community, running Community Cafe’s, giving and receiving trainings and advocating for our families. Enrichment Activities:

Do you have a special skill, talent, area of interest, training you offer, or an idea of how you would like to support families? We would love to hear about it! The Family Support Center of South Sound is always looking for new workshops to offer to families at our shelter Pear Blossom Place; this may include piano lessons, arts and crafts, resume building workshop, or architectural drawing 101. If you have an idea of a workshop or activity you would like help lead, please contact our Development Director today.
